Matthew 5:43-45 - “[Love for Enemies] "You have heard that it was said, 'Love your neighbor and hate your enemy.' But I tell you: Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you, that you may be sons of your Father in heaven. He causes his sun to rise on the evil and the good, and sends rain on the righteous and the unrighteous.” Brought to you by BibleGateway.com. Copyright (C) NIV. All Rights Reserved. MIssion of the First United Methodist Church Joaquin
Members of the Methodist Church gladly minister to our entire community, bringing the good news of God's love made known through Jesus, by witnessing the Gospel, sharing our lives, and being committed to the welfare of the others. We strive to be a church where love is an action and not just a word.

Happenings at FUMCJ
Sunday was the fifth Sunday after the Epiphany. The Old Testament Lesson was Isaiah 6: 1-8. The Epistle Lesson was 1 Corinthians 15: 1-11 and the Gospel Lesson was Luke 5: 1-11. We met once again in our fellowship hall as new flooring is being laid in the sanctuary, the old fellowship, the old kitchen, and the bathrooms. Everything looks so bright, fresh, and new. I certainly appreciate everyone’s patience during this transition time. On the first Sunday of every month we take up a collection for Joaquin Christian Services. During the month of February, we are taking up rice and dried beans for the food pantry at the Joaquin Christian Services House.
The Gospel Lesson finds Jesus teaching along the Lake of Gennesaret which is also called the Sea of Galilee, the Sea of Chinnereth, and the Sea of Tiberius. Not only does he bring good news to the fishermen, he gives them a couple of helpful hints that produces a huge haul of fish. Simon is so overwhelmed that he falls upon his knees and said, “I’m a sinner and can’t handle this holiness. Leave me to myself.” Of course Jesus doesn’t leave Simon alone and tells Simon that he will become a fisher for men and women. Jesus didn’t leave Simon alone and he won’t leave us alone. He works on our hearts seven days a week.
Our worship time was made brighter when Avis and Barney walked in. It was so great to see them. Ms. Avis played the piano for worship service and sounded so good. Simone Duron lead the singing this morning. Teddy and LeAnn were at Sunday School and church and we finally got to sing happy birthday to Teddy. Watch out world—Teddy is sixteen! Rick Sherrod came and worshipped with us this morning and we sure enjoyed having him come and be part of our worship. Rick knew many people in the congregation and they enjoyed visiting with him before and after church.
We had a small crowd for Family Night Wednesday. Many of those who regularly come have been sick and some didn’t want to take a chance on this unpredictable East Texas weather. After watching the news this weekend, I imagine all of us are happy not to be living in the northeast. Let us keep all of those people in our thoughts and prayers as they begin to dig out of record snowfall. It was great to see Mary Skinner. Mary hasn’t been feeling well. Even though our numbers were few, I think everyone enjoyed the food and the visit. This Wednesday, our Bible Study will continue our study of the Gospel of John. We had a very lively and informative study when we studied the first chapter. The Breakfast Club began with a Lenten devotional. After prayers we went and had breakfast together. We meet every Thursday at 8:00 AM.
The Gary basketball team travels to Joaquin Thursday. There are three members of our church who play basketball for Gary. A few of us plan on going to that game and cheering for both Joaquin and Gary!
The Trustees will have their regular meeting Wednesday at 5:00. The chair of the Trustees, Larry Hennigan is still rehabbing the shoulder that was repaired in December. The Trustees have several items to discuss and none bigger than the renovations. Next Sunday after the worship service the Church Council will have its monthly meeting
